Oakland County Released Inmates

An Oakland County released inmates search points to several different official tools because no single Michigan portal lists every recently released person. The Oakland County Jail releases people as close to 12:01 a.m. as possible on a scheduled outdate. State prisoners released from Michigan Department of Corrections custody appear in MDOC OTIS for a limited window. Federal releases route through the Bureau of Prisons. Victim notifications run through MI-VINE. To search for Oakland County released inmates online, the right tool depends on whether the person was held by the Sheriff, the state, or the federal government.

Does Oakland County Publish a Released Inmate List?

Oakland County does not publish a separate "released inmates within X days" list on its official pages. Release information lives inside the jail's Inmate Information page, and current custody status is searched through the CLEMIS Inmate Locator. Once a person is released, the record drops off the live locator. There is no standing public list of inmates released in the last 7 or 30 days.

For verified release confirmation, the cleanest path is the Sheriff's inmate information line at 248-858-1800 or prisonerinfo@oakgov.com. The Sheriff's jail page says charge or bond records may be up to 72 hours out of date, so a recently released inmate may still appear in the locator briefly. The CLEMIS Inmate Locator landing screen at apps.clemis.org/ClemisInmLoc is the right starting point for current status.

How to Confirm Release

Multiple official channels can confirm an Oakland County release. Each one has a different lag and a different scope. The list below summarizes the standard methods.

  1. Search the CLEMIS Inmate Locator at apps.clemis.org/ClemisInmLoc after solving the reCAPTCHA and picking Oakland County Jail.
  2. Call 248-858-1800 for inmate information, or email prisonerinfo@oakgov.com.
  3. Sign up for MI-VINE notifications through VINELink or 1-800-770-7657 for custody-status alerts.
  4. If the person was sent to state prison, search the MDOC OTIS Offender Search at michigan.gov/corrections.
  5. If the person was sent to federal custody, search the Federal Bureau of Prisons Inmate Locator.
  6. For a verified judicial outcome that triggered the release, pull the case in Court Explorer for Circuit cases.

Scheduled Release Procedure

For a scheduled outdate, the person waiting on the release reports to the Bonding window at the Oakland County Jail. The Sheriff's office runs a current LEIN check on the inmate's name. If there are no holds, warrants, or detainers, the inmate is released as close to 12:01 a.m. as possible. Once cleared, the waiting party is directed to return to the parked car and the inmate meets them there.

If LEIN shows an open warrant or detainer from another court, county, or MDOC, release is paused until that hold is resolved or transferred. That is why a person facing an outdate from a misdemeanor sentence may still sit in jail for a different hold. Resolving warrants in advance avoids the delay; see warrant records for the resolution path.

MI-VINE Release Notifications

MI-VINE is the Michigan victim and community notification service. The state's Voices4 page says MI-VINE is a free, confidential 24-hour telephone and computer interface that lets victims and community members register for offender custody and court schedule notices. The service is built on VINELink, the national victim notification platform. Registration is by phone at 1-800-770-7657 or online through vinelink.com.

MDOC OTIS Offender Search

If an Oakland County defendant is sentenced to state prison or sent to MDOC supervision, the Sheriff's jail record falls off the live locator. The Michigan Department of Corrections OTIS Offender Search becomes the right tool. OTIS covers prisoners, parolees, and probationers currently under MDOC supervision and people who have been discharged within the past three years. It does not include county jail-only inmates, city lockup inmates, sentenced people awaiting transport, offenders discharged more than three years, or records exempt under Michigan FOIA.

A returned OTIS profile shows offender ID, status, current location or supervising agent, sentence summary, projected discharge date, and prior convictions reported into OTIS. The state notes that more information returns better results, and a fingerprint-based personal record check is available separately through MSP.

Federal BOP Inmate Locator

The Federal Bureau of Prisons Inmate Locator covers people in federal custody. It is separate from CLEMIS, MDOC, and the Oakland County Jail. For an Oakland County defendant whose case lives in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, the BOP locator at bop.gov/inmateloc is the right tool after sentencing or after federal transfer.

Michigan Sex Offender Registry

The Michigan State Police Public Sex Offender Registry is not a release list, but it can show post-release registration status for offenders required to register under Michigan law. MSP's registry page lists status values including Active, Incarcerated, Pending Out of State, Inactive Out of State, Absconder, Homeless, School Only, Employment Only, and several violation statuses.

A registry profile may include photo, registration number, aliases, scars or marks or tattoos, offense information, address, campus information, employment, and vehicle information. The registry is not a release alert tool but is often the next stop for people verifying that an offender required to register has updated information after a release.

Parole and Probation

Michigan parole is supervised by MDOC. A person released from state prison to parole appears in OTIS with parole status and the name and contact of the supervising parole agent. Probation in Michigan splits between MDOC field operations for felony probation cases out of the 6th Circuit Court and local district court probation departments for misdemeanor probation cases. Oakland County district courts run their own probation units; the 52-1 District Court probation page in Novi, for example, lists Drug Court, Sobriety Court, Veterans Court, Mental Health Court, and Community Courts as specialty probation tracks.

Reentry Resources in Oakland County

Oakland County links reentry-relevant resources from several official pages. The Sheriff's victim resources page connects people to MI-VINE and Crime Victim Rights Act services. The Sheriff's homepage links United Way for Southeastern Michigan and FindHelp.org. The county also runs Oakland County Veterans Services for veterans returning to the community. Pretrial & Justice Services programs link to Adult Treatment Court and the Combat Veterans Treatment Court for ongoing court supervision.

For legal help after release, Michigan Legal Help is the statewide self-help site for divorce, custody, expungement, housing, public benefits, and small claims. The Oakland County Indigent Defense Services Office handles appointed counsel for new criminal matters in the 6th Circuit Court and the four divisions of the 52nd District Court. The State Bar of Michigan also runs a lawyer referral resource for private attorneys.

Civil Rights and Clean Slate After Release

Michigan voting rights generally return when a person is not confined in jail or prison for a sentence; people on parole or probation in the community can register and vote. The Michigan Secretary of State runs voter registration through the Online Voter Registration site and Branch Offices.

Michigan's Clean Slate automatic set-aside process began in April 2023. Under MCL 780.621g, eligible misdemeanors and felonies become nonpublic on a set schedule. Application-based set-asides under MCL 780.621 must be filed in the convicting court. Some offenses are not eligible at all, and traffic set-asides do not always clear the Secretary of State driving record under MCL 780.621c. The MSP conviction set-aside page spells out application fees and required materials.

Property, Mail, and Account Access After Release

On release from the Oakland County Jail, an inmate's stored property is returned during the release process. Mail received after release through Smart Communications can still be retrieved. The Sheriff's Inmate Information page says that on release a person can log into smartinmate.com using the inmate number and password to download postal mail, electronic messages, and photos for free. That account access is important for anyone separating from Smart Communications phone, video, and messaging services after a stay.

Note: A clean CLEMIS Inmate Locator search after a recent release is normal; the live locator drops a record once the person is no longer in custody, even if the booking is still in the Sheriff's file.
