Search Oakland County Inmates

An Oakland County inmate search starts with the Sheriff's CLEMIS Inmate Locator. The roster shows current custody status at the Oakland County Jail in Pontiac and links a record to the booking agency that arrested the person. To look up Oakland County inmates online, the portal asks the user to solve a reCAPTCHA and pick Oakland County Jail. Visitation, mail, phone, and money rules are handled by Smart Communications and the Sheriff's Corrective Services Division. Charge or bond details on inmate records may be up to 72 hours out of date, so anything used in court should be confirmed with the court of jurisdiction.

How to Use the CLEMIS Inmate Locator

The Oakland County Sheriff's Office links the CLEMIS Inmate Locator from the Sheriff's homepage and from the jail page. The portal sits at apps.clemis.org/ClemisInmLoc and is the official current-custody search for the Oakland County Jail. CLEMIS is a regional law-enforcement information system; the inmate locator is its public face for jail rosters across member agencies.

The landing screen renders a Google reCAPTCHA before any inmate data loads. Once reCAPTCHA is solved, the page shows a Jail Details table with the Oakland County Jail entry, including Sheriff Michael J. Bouchard's name, the jail address, and the phone number. The user clicks Select for Oakland County Jail, which posts the agency code and hidden CAPTCHA token, and the inmate result fields then load.

  1. Open apps.clemis.org/ClemisInmLoc in a browser.
  2. Solve the Google reCAPTCHA.
  3. Find Oakland County Jail in the Jail Details list.
  4. Click Select to call the agency selection.
  5. Run the search by name or by booking number.
  6. Open a result to see charge, bond, and custody status.
  7. For more recent charge or bond detail, call inmate information at 248-858-1800.

Oakland County Jail Facilities

The Sheriff's Office runs one of the largest jail systems in Michigan. The Main Jail at 1201 North Telegraph Road in Pontiac was built in 1973. The second floor is maximum security and houses about 440 inmates. The first-floor intake area handles new arrests in holding tanks and observation cells with 109 beds. A 24-hour health clinic operates on site with seven single cells. The Annex direct-supervision facility, attached to the Main Jail, was completed in March 1989 and adds 487 beds. The East Annex satellite facility holds 398 beds and was built in 2003 as a Work Release facility, repurposed for general population in March 2010, moved into Corrective Services in 2022, and is currently closed and not housing inmates.

Booking, Charges, and Bond

The Corrective Services Division admitted 12,247 prisoners in 2024, or roughly 12,000 admissions per year on average. The Sheriff's Corrections, Courts and Technology Group page says the division supervises approximately 1,664 inmates at security levels from maximum to low-level offenders. Major Larry Perry leads the group.

Bond is set by the court of jurisdiction, not the Sheriff. The Sheriff's Inmate Information page says the Bonding Area operates 24 hours a day. The jail accepts Regular, Surety, Interim, and Fines and Costs bonds. Cash bonds of $10,000 or more are processed at the court of jurisdiction. Bond can be paid with cash, credit card, or cashier's check made out to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, or through a bail bondsman. Cryptocurrency is not accepted. Inmate trust account money may be used to pay bond in whole or in part with the inmate's approval.

Phone, Mail, and Money

Smart Communications runs inmate phone, video visitation, electronic messaging, and trust-account deposits. Funds become credits, where one credit equals $0.01. Phone calls are $0.06 per minute. Each inmate gets one free 15-minute phone call per week, separate from the initial booking call, which is capped at three minutes. Attorney calls are free and unlimited, and are not recorded if the attorney submits the required letter on letterhead to the jail's Executive Lieutenant.

Three mail paths exist. Standard postal mail must go through Smart Communications at Oakland County Jail, Inmate Name - Inmate Number, PO Box 9103, Seminole, FL 33775-9103. Legal or business mail goes directly to Oakland County Jail, Inmate Name - Inmate Number, PO Box 436017, Pontiac, MI 48343. Electronic messages run through SmartInmate at up to 30,000 characters; the minimum deposit is $5.00 with a one-time $1.50 setup fee. Messages are $0.50 each, photos are $1.00 each, and every Saturday each inmate gets two free messages, one incoming and one outgoing.

Money deposits to inmate trust accounts go through Smart Communications. Customer support is at 727-349-1561 or toll-free 888-253-5178. Cash or money orders (no checks) can still be dropped off at the Visitation area in the Main Jail when the inmate name and number are clearly written on the money order. Packages of any kind are not accepted, and standard mail cannot be dropped off at the jail.

Visitation Schedule

All Oakland County Jail visits use a video visitation system, and every visit must be scheduled through Smart Communications. Each inmate is allowed one free visit and one paid visit per week. Visits may be on-site or remote, and they last 15 or 30 minutes. Special visits can be requested by contacting the jail. Visits must be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance and can be scheduled up to two weeks ahead.

Off-site visits from a computer or cell phone cost $0.11 per minute (11 credits per minute). The dress code bans transparent clothing, shorts or skirts more than two inches above the knee, tank or tube tops, bathing suits, revealing attire, and clothing with drug, alcohol, or gang messages. The Visitation Unit staff has final say on acceptable attire.

Release Timing and LEIN Holds

For a scheduled outdate, the person checking on the release checks in at the Bonding window at the Oakland County Jail. The Sheriff's office runs a current LEIN check on the inmate's name and case. If there are no holds, warrants, or detainers, the jail releases the inmate as close to 12:01 a.m. as possible. Once cleared, the waiting party is directed back to the car and the inmate meets them there.

If a LEIN hit shows a warrant or detainer from another court, county, or the Michigan Department of Corrections, release is paused until that hold is resolved or transferred. See the released inmates page for the full release verification path. For inmates who are transferred to state prison, the MDOC OTIS tool replaces the local roster.

MDOC, BOP, and the Sex Offender Registry

Oakland County Jail records do not cover every Michigan custody status. Once a person is sentenced to state prison, MDOC OTIS is the official tool. OTIS includes prisoners, parolees, and probationers under MDOC supervision, plus people discharged within the past three years. People in federal custody appear in the Federal Bureau of Prisons Inmate Locator instead. The federal locator is separate from CLEMIS, MDOC, and Oakland County records.

The Michigan State Police runs the Michigan Public Sex Offender Registry. It is not a custody roster; it lists registered offenders who must update their information by law. Searchable fields include name, registration number or MDOC number, address, city or county or ZIP, neighborhood map, and a radius of .25, .5, 1, 2, or 5 miles. Status values include Active, Incarcerated, Pending Out of State, Inactive Out of State, Absconder, Homeless, School Only, Employment Only, and several violation statuses.

Sheriff's Records Unit and Jail File Requests

The Sheriff's Records Unit handles incident reports, traffic citations, inmate jail files, gun registration, and FOIA requests tied to Sheriff's operations. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with walk-in fingerprint clients asked to arrive before 4:30 p.m. For PREA reporting, the jail has a zero-tolerance policy and accepts reports through the Visitation Unit during business hours, the 24-hour inmate information or shift supervisor line at 248-858-1800, or prisonerinfo@oakgov.com.

For a copy of a jail file or an incident report tied to an arrest, the Records Unit is the right office. Requests are filed under Michigan FOIA under MCL 15.233, with fees calculated under MCL 15.234. Some records may be withheld in active investigations, but most closed jail files can be released. For court charge and disposition data, the underlying court file in court records is the source of truth.

Note: CLEMIS Inmate Locator data can be up to 72 hours out of date on charge and bond; verify time-sensitive details with the court of jurisdiction.
